Thank you for your interest in Temple Israel Portsmouth!

We are a diverse, welcoming community made up of Jewish individuals and couples or families that include at least one Jewish partner. The questions below are intended to help us integrate you and your family into our ritual and communal life.

All our members are invited to participate in all non-ritual temple activities. However, certain religious rituals (such as having an aliyah during a Torah service) may only be performed by Jewish individuals.

Our religious school welcomes all children who are being raised as Jews, whether they have one or two Jewish parents. Our synagogue follows the Jewish laws and standards established by the Conservative movement, which assigns religious status based on the religion of the mother. Therefore, if a child’s mother is Jewish, but their father is not Jewish, the religious status of their child is Jewish. If the father is Jewish and the mother is from another faith, we will support the parents in guiding the child to a formal commitment to Judaism by immersing in a mikveh (ritual bath) sometime before they become a bar/bat/kabbalat mitzvah at the age of 13.
